The beer from here–brewery history
Prenzlauer Berg was at one time something like the“belly of Berlin”.The large gas plant, the central stockyard and the mill concentration that had been existing for centuries on the outskirts of the city, proved to be decisive for the city organism of large Berlin, limitedby the surrounding vineyards in the North of the old Berlin City.Downright all-powerful,however, became the large brewery complexesat the edge of Barnim that placedBerlin in the guild ofthe large brewery cities of the world.
In front of the gates ofPrenzlau and Schönhausseveral breweries were set up at short intervals:ThePfefferberg brewery(1841),thebreweryKönigstadt (1851),theSchultheiss brewery(1853) and theBötzow brewery (1861).Finally, in the area around the Schönhauser Allee, at least 13 breweries can be all accounted for to havebeen producing in the second half of the 19th and in the first half of the 20thcentury.The parent company of the Schultheiss group, the largest lager beer brewery in the world had its headquarters in the city district. Here, in the large beer gardens near the breweries and additionally in restaurants like the Prater in theKastanienallee, a respectable portion of the beerwas also instantly sold.
The end of this flourishing period began with the large breweries dying after the first world war. Only a few companies still produced after 1945.In 1967 the Schultheiss breweryshut down its operation in the Schönhauser Allee. In the Berliner Allee, the Berliner Weißewas produced until 1990 by the former brewery Willner, who then like Schultheiss belonged to the VEB Getränkekombinat Berlin (a publicly owned enterprise in the GDR).
A bit more than 20years ago you could see on the major traffic routesleading from the heart of Berlin to the North, the developed large-scale industries in ruins. Then, the old brick buildings still let you recognize their faded splendor. The large complexes seemed to have forever left their future behind them.
But a lot has changed. The brewery buildings are highly developed real estates with exciting new concepts of use. The revitalizing of the old production buildings for cultural offersis highly remarkable in all the locations of the historical brewery places, this includes businesses, gastronomy, educational and social companies.
