Everyday life in the GDR
Museum in the KulturBrauerei
The permanent exhibition "Everyday Life in the GDR" by the Foundation Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland shows how the SED regime shaped the lives of the East Germans and how they reacted to the ongoing paternalism of the state and the shortcomings of the socialist planned economy: with creativity, stubbornness, but also pragmatism and the flight into private idyll. The exhibition also documents how the SED regime dealt with those who were not prepared to come to terms with the limits and constraints of dictatorship. More than 800 original objects and documents as well as numerous documentary film and sound recordings show the gap between the demands and the reality of life in the GDR.
