The permanent exhibition “Die Pankower Machthaber”(The Pankow leaders) in the gatehousesof the Schönhausen Palace, documents the history of the area around the Schönhausen Palace after 1945 as part of the ruling system of the SED and classifies it in the context of the history of the Soviet Zone/GDR. In 1949, virtually the entire leadership of the GDR moved into the residential area at the »Majakowskiring« only a few steps away.On show isthe political self-image of the GDR power elite, their staging in public and their increasing distance from the population.Moreover, the exhibition provides insights into everyday life and the privileged situation of the SED top officials.
