Gatehouses of the Schönhausen palace complex

The Pankow rulers. The Majakowskiring and Schönhausen Palace after 1945

The permanent exhibition “The Pankow rulers” in the gatehouses at the entrance to Schönhausen Palace documents the history of the area around Schönhausen Palace after 1945 as part of the SED system of rule and places it in the context of the history of the Soviet Occupation Zone/GDR. Almost the entire leadership of the GDR moved into the residential area on “Majakowskiring”, just a few steps away, after 1949.

On display are the political self-image of the GDR power elite, their public image and their growing distance from the population. The exhibition also provides insights into the everyday lives and privileged situation of the top SED functionaries.

An exhibition in cooperation with the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam (ZZF), “Für Pankow e.V.” and the Federal Academy for Security Policy, Bundeswehr Service Center Berlin.
