Stadtbad Oderberger

Public Bath House

The V. Berliner Public Bath House and Cleansing Institute built after the plans of the architect Ludwig Hoffmann opened in 1902. Today, the architectural monument houses a modern publicly usable pool with spa, restaurants, hotel rooms, and seminar rooms.

In the 19 hundreds more than half of the Berlin flats didn’t have their own baths or toilets. Therefore the Berlin Magistrate decided to build another public bath house in Oderberger Strasse, where you could have a shower, take a bath and go for a swim in the large pool they had. The cleansing baths along with the swimming baths were an important step into improving personal hygiene and the recuperation of the tenants in the area of Prenzlauer Berg. Ludwig Hoffmann (1852-1932) was the city building advisor since 1896, he was responsible for the construction of many important buildings, bridges, fountains and springs. For example the New Townhouse, the Märkische Museum, the Pergamon Museum and the fairy fountains in the Volkspark Friedrichshain as well as for the hospital in Buch. The architect characterised Berlin to what it looks like today through his own style and flair. Since 1986 the Bath has been closed but in the year 2000 an association was arranged that bought the bath in 2002 with the intension to restore it. But they were not successful in financing a refurbishment.
The district administration of the city district of Pankow gaveits consent in 2011 to a renovation and usage concept of the adjacent GLS language school, which included a monument related renovation of the swimming poolthat is open to the public and can be used as an event hall. In 2012 the renovations started and, in the spring of 2016, the “StadtbadOderberger” (public pool)was re-opened.
