Pfefferberg
On the incline in front of the Schönhauser city-gate the Bavarian master-brewer Joseph Pfeffer founded the first brewery in today’s district Prenzlauer Berg. The Pfefferberg is now a well-known place with versatile offers.
for various events in Berlin.
In the beginning the "Bairischbier Brauerei Pfeffer" on the road to Pankow (today Fehrbelliner Strasse / corner Schönhauser Allee) consisted only of a small brewery with a cellar and a beer garden with wooden pavilions where beer was served. After 1851 the brewery changed hands a couple of times, expanded and was converted into a joint-stock company. It was bought in 1919 by the Schultheiss brewery but shut down in 1921. In the years 1921 to 1922 the building administration of the district department Prenzlauer Berg had its seat there. Until 1934 the building housed the chocolate factory of the son of the founder of "Sarotti AG Max Hoffmann", and after that it contained the "Germania Brotfabrik" (a big bakery). In 1949 the owners were expropriated and the area became "property of the people." Until 1972 various administrations, apprentice workshops, stores, a public kitchen, the print-shop and the truck-park of the biggest SED newspaper "Neues Deutschland" were there. After 1973 the Prenzlauer Berg district communal administration of housing controlled the large building complex. By 1991 all 21 buildings stood under monumental protection, and with financial support of the Land Berlin since 1999 the entire area of the former brewery belongs to the "Foundation Pfefferberg".
In recent years, the renovation and new use of each building were regulatedthroughthe hereditary leasehold contracts. The Pfefferberg became a modern center for cultural, commercial services, and social institutions with a theater, galleries, event halls, restaurants, a small brewery, and a hostel.
