On three floors, a total of 27 rooms are decorated for visitors elaborately according to historical specifications: The ground floor is reserved for the Prussian Queen Elisabeth Christine, the wife of Frederick the Great. She used the palace as a summer residence in the 18th century for more than 50 years. The exhibition rooms onthe upper floor are dedicated to the noble familyzu Dohna,theywere responsible for the building of the original Schönhausen Palace,dating back to the 1660s.
Also, on the upper floor is the office room of the first president of the GDR, Wilhelm Pieck, it is furnished with a desk and conference furniture.Between 1949 and 1960, Schönhausen Palace was the seat of the head of State of the GDR, then it was used as a residence for the state guests between 1964 and 1990.The office room and the elegant President garden date back to this period. After the palace was the seat of the State Council of the GDR from 1960 to 1964, it was finally used by the GDR government until 1990 as a guest house. The preserved State guest apartment is furnished in the style of the 1960s, while the fireplace room shows the refurbishing of 1978.In these rooms were well-known personalities like Indira Gandhi or Michail Gorbatschowas guests.
Explanatory texts and accompanying images on large steles and audio-guides open a vivid image to the guests of the palace museum with historic features and the associatedchanges of the premises representing their times.
