Spaceland

Klaus Hartmann in the Andreas Schmidt Gallery

The exhibition Spaceland is the second solo exhibition of Klaus Hartmann in the Galerie Andreas Schmidt. It shows new paintings from 2018. Klaus Hartmann is an intensive observer and motif collector who fixes all sorts of remarkable details and surprising situations with an alert eye and a small camera in order to later evaluate them as source material for his painting.

On the outskirts of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, for example, he observed a photo shoot of an illustrious wedding party. Bridesmaids in waving red dresses pose with children and the wedding couple in front of a camera team. From the snapshots he took of this scenery, he developed the picture "DAR", composed of various individual pictures. It is formally reminiscent of a multi-part postcard. In a large-format cactus picture, it is the directness of the motif with a white border that is reminiscent of a holiday card.

Yet despite the obvious banality and familiarity of the motifs, none of Hartmann's paintings provides the viewer with a one-dimensional conclusive interpretation. Sometimes his paintings appear like montages of various fragments of reality, yet they are only finds from our everyday world.
